Kathy: Blogging Slackers

Once again the Waldens have been slacking off on the blogging front! We'll plead an extremely busy two weeks, with a dash of lack of inspiration thrown in.

But don't take our apathy as bad news. Both kids are having a great summer, and Leah May continues to improve a little every day. She's speaking more English and is doing a terrific job of parroting entire sentences, though she may not understand what exactly she's saying. Christmas has somehow got her attention, so she's been asking endless questions about Santa Claus and seems very concerned about how he'll manage to find our house.

Over the weekend we decided to remove the training wheels from her bike; the wheels were about to collapse (in fact, they fell apart in David's hands just after he removed them), and we were already on our second set because training wheels are really intended for the weight of a 3- or 4-year-old, not a 7-year old. We were certain that Leah May would be afraid and refuse to ride her bike without the training wheels, but boy did she prove us wrong! She immediately began zipping up and down our driveway, and very quickly picked up the art of steering and starting the bike all by herself. She's had only 3 minor spills since Saturday!

Rene seems to be enjoying his role as big brother more these days, though sometimes he still pines for his former life as an only child. He loves introducing people to his sister ("She speaks Cebuano!", he proudly tells everyone, as if most people know what Cebuano is). He's also developed a love for locusts and has been collecting both the empty shells and live locusts at every opportunity. See the photo below to view his latest acquisitions.

In sad news, our air conditioner decided to die on Saturday night. Leah May, of course, is rather used to sleeping in a stifling hot environment, and both kids were enthralled with the idea of sleeping with fans blowing on them all night. They each had a large box fan in their rooms, and they could scarcely contain their excitement at bedtime. Mom and Dad are decidedly less excited about paying for a new air conditioner.

And that's all I have to report for now. It's a good thing, too, because Rene and Leah May have decided to flag down two Mormons walking down the street so that they can show off their bike riding prowess. Fortunately the Mormons appear to be in a hurry to get home; this is the first time I've seen Mormons being the ones to try and get away from someone! Regardless, I'd better head toward the driveway and give a lecture on Why We Don't Flag Down Religious Prosyletizers. My work is never done.
