Kathy: Our Big First Grader!

Today Leah May started first grade! David and I decided that our lives aren't hectic enough, so Leah May and Rene are attending different schools this year so that she can be in an English Language Learners program. She's attending the elementary school down the street from our house.

Between her and Rene, I don't know who was more excited; both of them woke up early this morning and were wound up like a three-dollar watch, as my dad used to say. For Rene I'm sure part of the thrill was knowing that he'd have Mom all to himself for nearly seven hours.

I seem to have blown the school's mind yesterday by asking the simple question of which door Leah May should enter since she wouldn't be riding the bus. The question was answered with a lot of pausing and a promise to ask someone what the procedure should be for a "walker." I'm not sure what the confusion was since I know I've seen kids walking and riding bikes to the school in years past, but I had to confirm several times that no, she wouldn't be riding the bus to school, seeing as we live a mere three doors away.

Being the slacker mom that I am, I completely forgot to put money into Leah May's lunch account. For those of you who haven't had small children in several decades, schools these days don't take lunch money but require parents to pay online and put money on a card. Rene's school doesn't have a cafeteria, so this whole lunch money thing is beyond me. Anyway, Leah May was excited about eating pizza today in the cafeteria, so I felt terrible last night when I realized that I'd forgotten to put money into the account for lunch today. Much to my relief Leah May woke up this morning and asked for rice for lunch instead, so I was happily making a pot of rice at 7:00 this morning. Whew!

In 15 minutes Rene and I will walk down the street to collect Leah May. Here's hoping she had a good day! If she didn't, at least tomorrow she can look forward to eating in the cafeteria since her mom finally got on the ball and gave her some lunch money.
