Kathy: On a Jeepney at Last

Hi everyone. Our computer problems continue to plague us, so no pictures again. I promise, we do actually have some!

Leah May is continuing to do well, but still alternating between excitement and sadness, especially today when she had to say goodbye to her caregivers. She also remains very wary of David and gets very anxious when I 'm out of her sight, even to go to the bathroom. Today when I needed to leave the hotel room to visit the front desk briefly, she absolutely refused to stay in the room with David and Rene. We were prepared for this, since kids in orphanages (girls especially) have very little contact with men. I'm sure she'll warm up before long, especially when she realizes that Daddy is the way to get anything she wants!

Rene's wish has finally been fulfilled: He got to ride in a jeepney today! For those not in the know, a jeepney is a quintessential form of public transportation in the Philippines. They're privately owned, discarded World War II jeeps that run regular routes and cost as little as a dime per ride. They're slow, bumpy, full of exhaust, and almost always packed with bodies, with people even riding on the back.

Anyway, Rene's been bugging us about riding in one since we arrived, especially after learning that Leah May rides one almost every day to school! We've explained that foreigners are discouraged from trying to ride them because of the risk of robbery, and also because you really have to know where you're going on those things, because riders sit with their backs to the windows, and the roof is low so you can't see where you are. We went to dinner tonight with Leah May's social worker and her family, and after hearing Rene ask about riding a jeepney (again) and my explanation of why we couldn't (again), they graciously agreed to take us on one back to our hotel. Rene loved every second of it!

Wish us luck for tomorrow! We're headed off to Cebu for a day, then on to Manila!

  1. Hey Kathy. I don't know if you have tried this. You can try clicking the start button, going to the control pannel, and clicking on network connections. If the hotel added a connection you can see what your previous connections are and go back to your default choice. Also you can right click on the mouse pad on the bottom right of your screen where the little computer image is and it will say open network connections. click on that and it will also show you what networks there are. you can chose and open network. You may also have to check your firewall settings and see if you are allowing public access computers for use. on the firewall settings there will be tabs when the box comes up. click on the advanced tab. it will tell you in the first box what networks you have access to. You can also restore your default settings at the bottom of that box. When you right click on the bottom right hand corner of the computer on the little one on the tool bar. It also comes up with a repair selection to click. you can click that and it will tell you what will repair and if something can't be repaired what the issue is. I don't know if this will help.
