Things have been much more peaceful in the Walden house the last few days. Leah May had a very good day today, is sleeping better in general, and seems to be more cheerful. Mornings are still bad for her, as might be expected, but by the end of breakfast she seems to cheer up. She's also continuing to warm up to David bit by bit.
She and Rene have become pals, though Rene is getting frustrated that Leah May isn't interested in throwing baseballs or going outside with him as much as he'd like.
Until yesterday we were very concerned about how little Leah May was eating and drinking. She ate very little when we were in the Philippines, and once we got home she barely consumed any food at all. This didn't bother me as much as the fact that she was drinking very little water as well. I even bought bottled water since she didn't seem to like the taste of our tap, but that didn't seem to help either. The one thing she did want to eat were some lollipops that we have on our kitchen counter, so several times I've held the candy hostage, refusing to give it to her until she drank a full cup of water.
But yesterday we discovered something she really likes, and it seems to have made a world of difference: ketchup. I suddenly remembered that Filipino children eat ketchup with a lot of things, so we offered some to her, and what a difference! So far she's put it on chicken, peas, green beans, spaghetti, and I can't even remember what else. We've had some strange looks in restaurants and Rene thinks it's the funniest thing he's ever seen, but if ketchup is what it takes to keep her nourished and healthy, I'll buy it by the truckload.
The one thing that didn't require ketchup was a brownie sundae I made for everyone today to celebrate the 4th of July. David gave Leah May her bowl, and she gave the biggest smile we've seen so far and said, "Sarap! [Delicious!] Thank you! Thank you very much!" Like mother, like daughter. :-)
